Tripura’s BJP-led government has initiated several programmes to encourage millet cultivation. The United Nations has announced the year as International Millet Year with support from 72 countries.
Millets are cultivated on 1,300 hectares of land and the state has adopted programmes to increase this area by 700 hectares in 2023-24. “In order to bring more land under millet cultivation, we have taken different programmes on millet cultivation through booklets on scientific millet cultivation, camps, seminars etc,” said Aputba Roy, secretary of the agriculture and farmers’ welfare department.
There are 4.72 lakhs farmers, of whom 3.13 lakh have their own land, 1.22 lakh are patta holders while 37,000 are share-croppers.
